Yellow Woollybear (Diacrisia virginica )

Larvae of the yellow woollybear are rare to occasional pests of soybean, but can cause severe damage when economic infestations develop. Larvae are covered with long hairs and colored white when young, but change to reddish-brown as they age. They damage soybean plants by feeding on leaf tissue and defoliating plants. There are two generations per year with most damage occuring late in the growing season. Natural control of yellow wolleybear larvae often occurs due to a fungal disease of the genus Entomophthora.
