Seedcorn Maggot (Delia platura)

The seedcorn maggot is up to 1/4 inch in length. It is a carrot-shaped, legless larva that is white to creamy yellow in color.

Damage is caused by burrowing into seeds and seedlings in cool wet soils. Any condition that delays germination increases the risk of damage from this pest. The adult is a fly that prefers to lay eggs in fields with decaying organic matter and poor drainage. This pest is found throughout the Midwest and South.
