Green Cloverworm (Plathypena scabra)

Green cloverworm larvae are up to 1-1/4 inches long. The light green body has two narrow white stripes down each side. The “3+1” arrangement of the abdominal prolegs is distinctive. The looping movement of small larvae often causes their misidentification as soybean looper.

This foliage feeder occurs throughout the South and Midwest. In parts of the South, it can be found in soybeans from June to October, yet it seldom causes enough defoliation to be of economic significance. Its presence helps build up beneficial insects and insect diseases. In areas of the Midwest, however, green cloverworm is regarded as a major soybean insect.
