Iron Deficiency

Iron deficiency is limited to high pH (7 or above) soils, mostly west of the Mississippi River. The deficiency is accentuated by very dry soil. Plants are stunted with pale green or yellow to nearly white leaves with green veins similar to manganese-deficient plants. Symptoms are usually confined to the upper part of the plant. Some herbicides can magnify symptoms and yield losses associated with iron deficiency. Tolerant varieties are the best solution for iron deficiency. Manure applications are also an excellent solution. Foliar fertilizer sprays can be of some benefit.
