Lightning kills 90% or more of soybeans and all other plants present in circular spots up to 40 feet or more in diameter. The affected spot generally has a clearly defined margin. Plants at the edge of the spot that are not killed have brown to black surface discoloration on the stems that could be mistaken for disease. Pith of such plants appears blanched. Lightning-affected areas do not expand with time.
