Sting Nematode (Belonolaimus spp.)

Sting nematodes are most common in light to coarse-textured soils of the southern Coastal Plain region of the U.S. Soybean plants infected with this nematode typically are yellowish and stunted. Dark, sunken lesions girdle the roots, resulting in a stubby root system.

Control is best achieved through good crop management, crop rotation and the use of nematicides where economical.

Above-ground symptoms of sting nematode damage are not unique. Infestations of sting nematode can be accurately diagnosed by detecting juveniles and/or adults of the nematode in soil samples.
