The lance nematode is found primarily in the southeastern U.S. and causes yellowing and stunting in an up-and-down pattern in the row. Once this nematode enters a soybean root, it migrates through the root cortex, rupturing cells and causing root lesions. Damage symptoms include proliferation of secondary roots early in the season, followed by degeneration of these roots later in the season. Also, there is an absence of nodules.
Above-ground symptoms of lance nematode damage are not unique. Infestations of lance nematode can be accurately diagnosed by detecting juveniles and/or adults of the nematode in soil samples. For severe infestations, rotate fields to nonhost crops or use a nematicide. Efficacy and economics should be considered when employing a nematicide for management of this nematode. |
